“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” ― George Bernard Shaw Clarity is transparency. Clarity is power. You speak to be heard and are seldom understood in this quest. You absorb what you feel suits your understanding till a conversation demonstrates otherwise. So, I asked myself, "Why does one feel misunderstood?" Here are a few reasons, I've arrived at: 1. You listen half-heartedly, isn't it? you're listening but not truly listening. So, how can you tackle this? REPEAT what has been said, "If I understand correctly, you are saying....." 2. Method of communication is the clincher. In the age of whatsapp, telegram, email a lot can get buried. Choose the right medium. If what needs to be said in person, do it. If it requires through an email or a voice recording, do that. There's so much clutter that voices may not be heard, effectively. 3. Are you giving orders? The listener may zone out in case he/she detests being given commands and the essence of the conversation can be missed. Create an atmosphere of congeniality. It pays. 4. Are you rushing through so you can get on with the next job? Speed may hamper communication flow with a lot being left unsaid. Slow down.
